Glossary
The words below are used throughout these docs and in the dashboard.
Source. A field encoder (a camera, a laptop running OBS, a hardware encoder) that sends its video in to the gateway. Each source has its own ingest address on its card.
Destination. Where a feed is routed to: usually a vMix or OBS machine, or a single piece of hardware or a streaming platform.
Slot. One of the three input positions on a vMix/OBS-style destination. You route a source to a slot by dragging it on the Operate tab.
Program-out. The destination's own finished output (for example, vMix's mix) sent back to the gateway. It can be sent back to the field as a return feed or fed to another destination.
Return feed. A preview or confidence feed the gateway sends back out to the field encoder, so the person at the camera can see what's happening.
Caller and listener. In SRT, one side calls (dials out) and the other listens (waits). The gateway always listens for sources, so your encoder must be set to caller. The gateway always calls out to destinations, so vMix or OBS must be set to listener.
Ingest. The address and port on the gateway where a source's video comes in. It is shown on that source's card.
Latency. The buffer SRT keeps so it can recover lost packets. A larger buffer rides out a worse connection but delays the picture. The gateway's default is 120 ms. See Ports and Troubleshooting for where to change it.
RTT, loss and retransmits. Round-trip time, lost packets, and packets re-sent to cover the loss. They are shown in Diagnostics for native SRT connections only. See Diagnostics and Signal Flow.
